Project Overview

"The Deserted Village of Slievemore, lies 3 kilometres North of Keel village on Achill Island, County Mayo. A significant archaeological site, the village comprises the remains of nearly 100 stone cottages from famine times, stretching over a kilometre and a half.

'Where They Once Stood' explores how the traces of history remain visible in our landscape. Struck by the silence of the empty homes, the series engages with a place shaped by hardship and loss. It recognises the Famine's continuing reverberations through Irish people and culture and the importance of not forgetting. It is an attempt to connect with what now remains, remembering the past and honouring the resilience of the people who once lived there."
