Central to the concept of ‘Moving Parts’ was that IADT students would create original peer-to-peer content for students across the entire higher education sector in Ireland. As such, the campaign supports the national roll-out of the Consent Framework and the assets have been made freely available to all HEIs to support training initiatives in this area with students and staff.
‘Moving Parts’ was co-ordinated by the IADT EDI Office and the student animators worked very closely with IADT staff, Claire McGing (EDI Manager) and Rachel Skelly (EDI Administrator). Dr Charlotte McIvor and Alexandra Black were the NUIG Active* Consent leads and Dr Emer Clifford and Alana Daly Mulligan were the Bystander Intervention leads from UCC. The animation students were guided in their creative work by IADT lecturers Teemu Auersalo, Gary Blatchford, Jack O’Shea, and David Quin.
The animations were produced in English and Irish (with subtitles). The Irish-language animations were translated by UCC students and are especially ground-breaking, as they represent the first time that interactive resources exploring sexual consent and SVH have been made publicly available in the Irish language.
The ‘Moving Parts’ project commenced in October 2020 and the full suite of assets was launched by Minister Simon Harris TD in March 2022.
From the outset, ‘Moving Parts’ was designed to create trauma-informed and survivor-led animated shorts on the themes of sexual consent, bystander intervention, and sexual violence and harassment (SVH). The animations were designed and created by YR3 IADT Animation undergraduate students, an IADT Animation Graduate, and an IADT Masters by Research student. The animators worked in self-directed creative teams and designed the visual responses in consultation with external stakeholders, including student survivors in UCC, and they created the animations guided by the inputs of experts, in this case, staff from IADT, UCC and NUIG.
